On Monday, Reza Yazdani won the gold medal in the men’s 96-kg category
after he defeated his Azerbaijani opponent at Budapest Sports Arena.
The 29-year-old Iranian athlete, who had overcome his Belarusian,
Canadian, Georgian, and Ukrainian rivals in his marches to the final
bout, downed Khetag Gazyumov from Azerbaijan in the category's last
Yazdani, who was defeated 2-0 in the first two minutes, closed the
second two minutes of the competition at 4-2 to claim the gold.
The bronze medal was shared by Anzor Boltukaev of Russia and Pavlo Oliinyk of Ukraine
Earlier in the day, Iran earned its first gold medal in the world
championships when freestyle champion Hassan Rahimi overwhelmed India’s
Amit Kumar in the final match of the men's 55-kg category.
The bronze went to Turkish athlete Sezar Akgul and Russian wrestler Nariman Israpilov.
The wrestler’s gold medal in the men's 55-kg weight class marks the
first after 42 years of the national Iranian freestyle wrestling team’s
participation in world championships.
The 2013 Senior World Wrestling Championships opened in the Hungarian
capital city of Budapest on September 16, and will wrap up on September
Budapest Sports Arena hosts the competitions in the three styles: Greco-Roman, men’s freestyle, and women’s freestyle
