Talks should aim to build trust: Larijani

Iran’s Majlis Speaker Ali Larijani says the forthcoming negotiations between Tehran and six major world powers on the Islamic Republic’s nuclear energy program should aim to build trust in order to yield results.

“The negotiations will lead to positive results if they are aimed at building confidence based on international regulations,” Larijani told reporters in Tehran on Friday upon his arrival from a three-nation European tour.

He expressed hope that the five permanent members of the UN Security Council and Germany would show “seriousness and wisdom” in the upcoming nuclear talks with Iran.

The top Iranian parliamentarian urged parties to the talks to abide by international regulations and pursue the negotiations within a “specific framework.”

Iran and the five permanent members of the UN Security Council - Russia, China, France, Britain and the US - plus Germany will hold a fresh round of talks in Geneva, Switzerland, on October 15 and 16.

Iran’s Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif sat down with his counterparts from the six countries at the United Nations headquarters in New York on September 26.

On October 1, the Iranian foreign minister said the dispute over Iran’s nuclear energy program can be resolved quickly, noting, however, that the Islamic Republic will not retreat from its rights to peaceful nuclear technology.

Larijani further said that during his visit to Geneva, he held talks with Serbian, Croatian and Swiss officials on the latest developments in the Middle East, particularly in Afghanistan and Syria.

He noted that the three countries see eye to eye with Iran on the necessity of a political settlement of the crisis in Syria while dismissing a military approach.

Syria has been gripped by unrest since 2011.
